About Lawyer Salaries

Hello everyone. Today, let's learn about "lawyer salaries." Lawyers have a strong image of high income, don't they? But in reality, there are significant differences depending on work style, workplace, and region.

Introduction: The Relationship Between Lawyer Work Content and Income

Lawyers are specialists who protect clients' rights and resolve disputes based on law. Work content can be broadly classified into the following 3 categories:

  1. Litigation practice … Defending clients in court
  2. Corporate legal affairs … Checking company contracts and compliance
  3. General civil cases … Consultation on life-related matters like divorce, inheritance, traffic accidents

Income varies greatly depending on which field you specialize in and where you work.

💡 Important Point: Lawyer income varies greatly depending on "ability, environment, and strategy."

Average Lawyer Salary (Japan)

According to surveys by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the average salary for all lawyers is around 8-12 million yen.

However, this is an "average," and in reality, there is a wide range from young lawyers earning around 3 million yen to top lawyers earning hundreds of millions of yen.

Salary Differences by Employment Type

(1) Lawyers Working at Law Firms (Associate Lawyers)

  • Starting salary is around 250,000-400,000 yen per month
  • Annual salary starts around 4-6 million yen
  • With experience and becoming a partner lawyer, 10 million yen or more is possible

(2) Independent Practicing Lawyers

  • If successful, earning tens of millions of yen annually is not a dream
  • However, if unable to acquire clients, it may remain around 3-5 million yen
  • Urban areas (Tokyo, Osaka) have intense competition but also many cases. Rural areas have fewer cases, but if you gain local trust, it can be stable

(3) In-House Lawyers

  • Lawyers working as employees at companies
  • Average salary around 8-12 million yen
  • At large companies, exceeding 15 million yen is possible, and working hours tend to be stable

Changes by Age and Career

  • Late 20s (beginner period) … Around 4-6 million yen
  • 30s-40s (mid-career) … Exceeding 10 million yen through independence or partnership
  • 50s and above (veteran) … Tens of millions of yen scale as managing lawyers

Comparison with Overseas Lawyers

United States

Average salary is around $150,000 (approximately 22 million yen). At large law firms (so-called "big law"), 30-50 million yen class is not uncommon.

United Kingdom

Partners at large firms earn 20 million yen or more.

Comparison with Japan

Japan is lower compared to Europe and America, but considering living standards and market size, it can be considered appropriate.

Advantages and Disadvantages

✅ Advantages

  • High income can be expected (especially if successful)
  • High social trust
  • Can contribute to society using specialized knowledge

❌ Disadvantages

  • Intense competition (especially for young lawyers in urban areas)
  • Business management skills are also necessary when going independent
  • Heavy burden of exams and training, requiring time and costs to obtain qualifications

Conclusion

Everyone, while lawyers are a "dream profession," not everyone has a high income.

  • There is a huge difference from 3 million yen to hundreds of millions of yen depending on workplace and work style
  • Young lawyers have lower income, but there's potential for significant growth as careers develop
  • While the average is lower compared to overseas, stability and social significance are great

In other words, lawyer income varies greatly depending on "ability, environment, and strategy."
